GBS Positive

Our midwife is coming over for a home visit today.  I called her yesterday because of my concern that I might have a UTI.  She was glad I called and said that she'd bring over a test kit to double check.  She also told me that I tested GBS positive.  At first I wasn't overly concerned as I know it's not terribly uncommon and is reasonably treatable.  (My sister had tested GBS positive too and there didn't seem to have any complications as a result of it.)

Then I started Googling.  I'm allergic to penicillin and wanted to find out what alternative anitbiotics are typically given.  What I found out was that having a UTI increases the risk to the baby.

I know of all the things that could potentially go wrong, this is minor, but I still can't help but worry that I'm going to make our baby sick.

THis is NOT the kind of update I want to get three-weeks from our due date, but I suppose there's not much that can be done.

  1. I suspect this is one of those times Dr. Google is a very bad friend. Surely if the elevated risks were that great, we'd be hearing more about them, right?

All the same, I am very sorry for the extra stress at a time when you could surely do with less to worry about. I hope the midwife has some comforting things to say.

  2. I'm sorry. I had this situation with my son. GBS positive and UTI. A UTI does make it scary and believe me, I worried just the same about hurting my son. We both ended up fine. Just do what it's your power- penicillin alternative - then retest later if possible.

  3. Oh, shoot. I agree with Bionic, though, the risks are probably much exaggerated by Dr. Google. It is so hard not to worry! I am sure your midwife will manage your care well and in the least invasive way. Try to think positive if you can. :)

  4. Listen to your midwife and avoid Dr. Google. He has made me think horrible things many times in the past! He is the worst doctor ever. I'm sorry you have added stress right now and I hope it's not as serious as you think.

  5. Boo! I am with everyone else, I am sure it will all work out fine and that Sprout will be here and healthy before you know it (For some reason I keep thinking 12-12-12, lol). I know it is hard, but try and not worry. Sending good thoughts your way.

  7. Aw, it's lousy that you're stuck feeling any extra worries during this home stretch. :( I'm sorry. So soon, though, her sweet smelling self will be in your arms and all these pregnancy worries will be done with. Thinking of all four of you with lots of love. RLG.
