*Navalgazing* Reflections at 5 weeks pregnant

This was a bit of a tumultuous week.

Tuesday morning I went in for my first set of blood work.  hCG came back at 647(LMP 4w3d), which confirmed pregnancy.  We, of course, were excited to have things confirmed again.  But then on Wednesday morning I had some brown discharge after going to the washroom.  I  was beside myself convinced that I was losing the pregnancy.  Jen was reassuring.  Google had conflicting messages.  The spotting went away as the day wore on, but of course, every time I went to the washroom I was anxious.  I waited for Thursday and the next set of blood work.

Thursday morning I had brown discharge again, but I also had my second set of blood work.  I was anxious to get the results.  The clinic called in the afternoon -hCG this time was 1600 (LMP 4w5d).  I was beyond happy, but didn't have much time to think about it since I was at the hospital just starting into the long stint of supporting my sister in labour.

In the wee hours of Friday morning, just as my sister was reaching 9cm, I felt a surge coming over me and I had to run to the bathroom to be sick.  From her bed, my sister called out, "Allison, is there something you're not telling us?"  To which, I replied, "Yes."  We really wanted to wait to share the news.  Not only to be more sure of things, but also because we wanted to give my sister and her husband their moment in spotlight.  They were the ones with the baby well on his way.  They deserve the focus to be on them and their child right now.  I told her that we're not telling anyone, and they seemed understanding.  I apologized for not being able to wait to tell them, but good sister that she is, she wasn't upset by it, just excited for us.  (Even if earlier in labour she was saying very adamantly to me, "Don't do it, Allison!  It is not worth it!")

I was really tired at the end of last week and earlier this week, but that seemed to taper off a bit.  Of course, I'm tired right now from being up all night on Thursday, but I expect that will sort itself out by the end of the weekend.  Smells have been really starting to get to me.  I can't quite tell if I'm smelling more, or if scents are just bothering me more.  I feel hungry a lot of the time, but also unable to eat a lot.  I'm making an effort to drink more water, which makes me have to pee constantly.

And now, I'll leave you with a photo of my five week tummy:

  2. Glad everything is okay with the spotting and that your beta is strong. I'm glad your sis was supportive and excited. I get the not wanting to steal her thunder, but she's obviously great about it! hope the nausea ceases soon.

  3. Congrats on your nephew!!

That's so exciting about your pregnancy. :) I was always feeling that hunger feeling. It's annoying, isn't it?

Brown = old blood. I wouldn't worry at all. :)

  4. Soooo Allison...not to scare you or anything but my hcg levels were pretty much the exact same with the twins ;) My first one was around 600 and my second was about 1300. Apparently, mine were fairly high making the nurses wonder if it was twins (or more!).

As for the spotting, I had the same thing happen at about 7ish weeks. Just like you, I was completely freaked out. It turned out that I had a very small subchorionic hemorrhage, which I blogged about: http://www.2moms2dogs2babies.com/2010/11/subchorionic-hemorrhage-and-gummy-bears.html They are extremely common. I was also told that spotting in the early weeks is very common because the little bean is firmly implanting itself which causes some of the uterine lining to scrape off. Since it is "older" blood is comes out brown.

  5. Thanks everyone for the well wishes. So far Friday morning has been my only bout with nausea... well, it's the only time I've actually been sick. I'm hoping it's not something that I experience on an ongoing basis.

Ashleigh, don't freak me out with your twin talk. ;) We're prepared for one more child, not two! (Though, if that's what we get, it's what we get.) Do you know when your hCGs were taken? I have to admit, I am already a bit concerned as I read 48-72 hours is the doubling time, and I went double and a half in 48 hours. I guess we'll see in a few weeks! I do know that I only had one follicle released. Identical twins? Oh my!

    1. My first blood test was exactly 2 weeks after the insemination. The next one was 48 hours later.

We saw that there were 2 follicles in the running but didn't know for sure if both eggs ovulated at that time.

I hope the morning sickness is kept at bay :)

    2. Our tests were 17 and 19 days after insemination, so that could explain the higher numbers. I looked on betabase and they seem like good/high singleton numbers.

  6. Kim also had spotting early on and I was freaked out but it was nothing.

Not to scare you, but I thought twins too when I saw those numbers. ;) Then again, the numbers are always really different for everyone.

  7. You are already sporting a cute baby belly :)

I think it is great the way you and your sister handled the announcement. You were very considerate to not "steal their thunder" as you said and I think that and her response is a testament to the strong relationship you two have. Lucky you. PS-I have taken to calling this one Sprout...at least until another blogger name is announced!

    1. We've started using the moniker "Sprout" already too! So you must be on the same wavelength as us. ;)

  9. Well, twins or not, your tummy shot sure is cute! Can't wait to see how that tummy grows!

  10. LOL ... I remember when we were sure we had only one because our beta numbers were lower and normal for singletons, not twins. Wrong! So though the numbers were great fodder for scrutiny, I didn't hold too much stock in them. Either way, I'm so very excited for you and your family on the newest addition(s)!! ;) Can't wait to hear/see how everything progresses.

Btw, I'm not sure if you've been awarded before, but I'm passing along a Liebster Award. You definitely deserve it! =)
