Sick

I feel like I need to apologize for things being quiet here lately.  We've had quite the few weeks... I'm having a hard time keeping track of just when things started...

I think it was about two weeks ago that we noticed little spots around The Bean's mouth.  He is, of course, a toddler and as such, he doesn't always appreciate being wiped down after meals, so we figured it was just a little bit of irritation from something that got left on his face.  Maybe an allergic reaction to the strawberries which he decided he liked again.  (For a day.)  But the next day it was worse.  Our lovely daycare provider said something about it and when we really checked him out we noticed they were not only on his face, but had also spread to his bottom, arms, legs, etc.  We called the public health nurse and took him to the doctor.  Some sort of viral rash was the "official" diagnosis.  Something in the vein of Hand, Foot and Mouth, but as I said, also bottom, and arms and legs.  Pretty nasty looking, but apart from the scabby ones on his face, The Bean didn't seem to bothered by it.  We kept him home for a couple of days, which was exhausting, but we didn't want him to share it with his friends.  Fortunately Sprout seemed immune.

And fortunately it (mostly) cleared up before his ring bearer duties at my brother's wedding.  I am not going to get into all the details, but I am so glad that it is over.  My brother is married and seems happy.  That is what is important, and I can try to forget about the less-pleasant parts.  (Number one for me being that our two-month-old had to be babysat in an upstairs room because there were "no children allowed."  The upstairs room arrangement only being being offered after many tears.  But I said I wasn't going to get into the details, so I'll leave it at that.)

And The Bean LOVED the "violins".  He still talks about them.

Later that week The Bean spiked a pretty good fever and had to be kept home for a few days again.  Poor kiddo.  This time he was feeling it.

I thought we had earned a break, but Sprout is now suffering with her second head cold.  (The first having run it's course sometime towards the beginning of all this crazy, but I truly cannot remember exactly when at this point.)  It is so sad to hear her snarfling and not be able to help.  Those nose aspirators are worthless.  I took ours apart and figured out a way to make it work better, but it's still only a temporary relief.  We've got her co-sleeper set up on an incline but that doesn't seem to be helping much either.  Last night, after being awake forever trying to get her settled, Jen took her out of the room so I could sleep.  Poor Jen, I know she is exhausted too, but those few hours of quiet saved me.  A nap is definitely on the agenda for today.   Though I know she's miserable, Sprout is still such a sweet pea, giving me big smiles when she's awake.

Maybe she knows all this is hard on me too and is trying to make me feel better? In any case, I love her and look forward to her (and her brother) both being well again soon.

    1. Thanks for the tips! I'm reluctant to use Vicks on Sprout as she's still so young, but the humidifier has been running 24/7. :)

    2. I wouldn't use Vicks on a baby. I won't even use it now on the girls (because of ingredients though).

It is super easy to make your own. Badger also makes a very gentle decongestant rub. When mine were under a year, I would rub it on the soles of their feet. It helps draw the cold out. Ever heard of the wet socks treatment for sickness?

    3. Wet socks was recommended to me when I was pregnant... it just seems icky so I didn't try it though.

Do you use eucalyptus in your rub?

  4. Ugh, sounds rough. Kim swears by Vick's Baby Rub rubbed on the bottoms of their feet. I don't know where she heard this, but it did seem to work for our babies and we still do it now. So if you're reluctant to rub it on her chest and back, maybe a little on her feet or even the outside of her sleeper might help. The jar does say 3 months and up so I would be hesitant too, but just a tip for next time.

The Bean's rash looks nasty. Glad Sprout didn't get it too.

    1. I was going to post a photo of his face, but it's just too awful. (I'm vain for my kids.)

  5. What an adorable picture of the Bean in his suit - I love little kids in fancy clothes.

Sorry to hear about all the sickness, hopefully everyone is on the mend :)

  6. I know you weren't going to go into detail but if there were no children allowed how come the bean was allowed?
Anyway, adorable as usual, esp that smiley picture!!!

    1. Oh, I should have clairfied, The Bean was the ring bearer --which meant he was allowed to be there for the ceremony and photos, but then Jen had to drive him home (to a babysitter) before the reception started.

    1. We're trying! Last night was better (in that Sprout actually slept), hopefully it means she's getting the rest she needs to fight off this nasty bug.

  8. We do vicks on our older son's feet, too. It helps with coughing. We rub it on and put socks on over it. It works wonders. On a side note: I hate that you had to be separated from your little one during the wedding. But, I've been to a few weddings where there were children and I thought "poor couple...they're up there in their beautiful moment and there's babies crying and toddlers getting anxious and being loud." I remember thinking at the last wedding I went to: "Who would bring a baby to a wedding?" I only thought that in the middle of being annoyed for the couple being wed. So, I'm sorry you were separated, but I kinda think it's a good rule...it's there day.

    1. I guess the difference there is that if one of our children were crying or interrupting the ceremony, we would leave with them. In fact, after The Bean performed his ring bearer duties, Jen did take him upstairs because he was too excited about the violins to sit quietly where he couldn't see them. Sprout, on the other hand, would have probably slept through the entire event and if she hadn't I would have certainly left the room. I wouldn't want to draw focus away from the couple.

  9. That sounds rough. My heart goes out to you over the wedding situation. When Felix was 4 months old, I wasn't allowed to bring him to a wedding my husband was a groomsman in...it put our family in a terrible position of choosing and it was very, very hard. Not sure what I would have done with a 2-month old! I honestly feel like the relationship with the married couple is permanently damaged because they forced me to make that choice in attending their wedding. It was my first time leaving my baby.

So anyway, I relate to what you are feeling and I just hope that when they start a family, they realize their mistake in judgment in asking that of you.
